Backstage Rialto, a 501(c)3 support organization for the Rialto Theater Center in Loveland, Colorado, presents “Festival of Frights” October 24-28. The Halloween festival will include spooky historic tours of the Rialto Theater, a special theatrical screening of the classic 1953 horror film “House of Wax,” starring Vincent Price, and the annual Ooze & Schmooze costume cocktail, preceding a screening theatrics of the 1958 cult classic horror film, “The Blob”, starring Steve McQueen. The week of events serves as a fundraiser for Backstage Rialto, with proceeds supporting programming efforts such as the Backstage Rialto Children’s Theater and vital technology upgrades for the Rialto Theater Center.
The Rialto celebrated its 100th anniversarye anniversary in 2020 and held an official centenary celebration earlier this year. The historical circuits, entitled “Ghost Tales: Historic Rialto Tourssheds light on some of the unexplained happenings over the past 102 years, which include many chilling and gruesome tales of real events in theater history. The round also gives attendees behind-the-scenes access to the nooks and crannies of Loveland‘s premier venue for cinema and performing arts that are not normally accessible to the public.
Known as “The Master of Menace,” classic film actor Vincent Price is perhaps best known to younger generations as the voice of the naughty professor. Ratigan in Disney’s “The Great Mouse Detective” and for his iconic monologue in Michael Jackson’s song “Thriller.” Throughout his career, he made 105 films of all genres and had a long career in theatre, radio and television. Chad Kennerk, Development Partner at Backstage Rialto, which assists the Price Estate, said: “Vincent Price is one of cinema’s most iconic villains. What many people don’t know about Vincent is that he was a great Renaissance man and an advocate of art. He was a driving force in raising awareness and appreciation of art in the United States, especially American art. Given Loveland’s rich carving history, there’s no better Vincent Price movie to show off this Halloween than “House of Wax,” where Vincent stars as a despised sculptor looking for revenge! The film will begin with a special video introduction by Vincent Price’s daughter, renowned author and lecturer, Victoria Price, recorded just for the occasion. Audiences are invited to join Backstage Rialto on the floor of the Devereaux before the movie for a drink and Vincent Price’s old-school radio presentation in “Three Skeleton Key.” The Bridge Bar will offer a themed themed cocktail for the occasion.
The screening of “The Blob” is a tip of the hat to Rialto‘s very own ‘blob.’ In the late 1970s, a long blob of tar, seeping from a ceiling, threatened viewers, especially those who dared to sit directly below. This will be the third annual screening of “The Blob” and will feature a special video introduction to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where the film was filmed. Bob Tratéthe programming director of the Colonial Theater brings “Blobfestat the Rialto with a special introduction that will take audiences to iconic filming locations from the film, including the interior and exterior of the historic Colonial Theater. For 23 years, the annual festival in Phoenixville, PA has commemorated the colonial‘its place in movie history as the filming location of the 1958 classic. The intro video will be hosted by the official host of Phoenixville‘s”Blobfest“Dash Daring and Matt McGinnis of “Mystery Science Theater 3000”.
Backstage Rialto is honored to have the encouragement and support of the Phoenixville Festival team and plans to continue making “The Blob” a fun tradition for Loveland every Halloween. Jim Dohertysaid Backstage Rialto Chairman of the Board, “This‘s a self-deprecating way to celebrate the Rialto‘s story and raise funds for theater improvements and additional programming. Join us before the movie for our special costume cocktail, which we‘I doubled “Ooze and Schmooze”! Ghost Tales Historic Rialto Tours will also appeal to anyone who appreciates our local history. Festival of Frights is a great way to support our beautiful Rialto Theater as all net proceeds will go towards improving the Rialto experience.
